Abbeville is a taste of yesteryear with it's cobblestone main square and historic architecture is like a travel in time back to the old south. The courthouse on the square once belonged to Revolutionary war leader Andrew Pickens. It also was the site that John C. Calhoun launched his political career. If you love history and or have a fascination with ghosts you will enjoy the annual "Ghost Walk" Abbeville is said to have numerous tales of old homes and buildings inhabited by what they say can only be ghosts of the past. |
Many "road companies" toured from New York to Atlanta, with the Opera House as an overnight stop. Between 1908 and 1913, Abbevillians enjoyed approximately 260 live performances on the magnificent Opera House Stage today the Opera House is fully restored to its turn-of-the-century condition with two exceptions - the addition of air conditioning and rocking chair seats. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater uses the same rope pulled rigging systems as in 1908, and is the only "Hemphouse" remaining in South Carolina. |
