Greenwood County is located in western South Carolina in the Piedmont physiographic
region of the state.The Piedmont region, located
between the Appalachian Mountains and the “low country” coastal plains, is
characterized by rolling hills and red clay soils.Greenwood County is bounded by the
adjoining South Carolina Counties of Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda,
Newberry, and Laurens. Excluding Newberry, these counties make up the Upper
Savannah region of South Carolina. Greenwood County is predominantly rural and is
not included within any Metropolitan Statistical Area. The nearest major urban areas
are Columbia (81 miles east), Greenville/Spartanburg (54 and 60 miles north,
respectively), Anderson (39 miles northwest), and Augusta, Georgia (59 miles south).
However, the influence of these urban areas is limited by the County’s lack of
interstate access.



Greenwood holds one of the region's largest freight rail yards.Greenwood's nickname is "The Emerald City" A town of smiling faces, friendly people and wide open spaces. 

Greenwood SC History

The Old 96 District, now a popular tourist destination in South Carolina, was originally inhabited by the Cherokee. This region was the birth place of the Confederacy. The region continued support a great amount of textile mills and various other businesses. The region is now a destination for tourists containing: churches, battle sites (both Revolutionary War and Civil War), and other tidbits of history. It spans across five counties, Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens and McCormick.

Festival Of Flowers


Every year in June, Greenwood plays host to the South Carolina "Festival of Flowers". Park Seed Corporation, located in Greenwood and one of the largest gardening companies in the world, plays a large part in the Emerald City's ability to host this event. The Festival encompasses far more than just a standard flower festival, and has also included Jazz concerts, Cessna flights for children, world food, a showcase for classic cars, and even a dog show. This event draws many gardening enthusiasts from around the nation.
